On 29th August 2025, Resources Himalaya Foundation (RHF) had the honor of hosting Dr. Gao Zhiwen, Associate Professor at Yunnan Normal University, China.
Dr. Gao specializes in the study of urban vegetation diversity and its ecological drivers. His research over the past seven years in Yunnan has revealed that urban areas, often considered biodiversity deserts, can in fact host a significant number of plant species, including endangered ones.
During his visit to Nepal, Dr. Gao will conduct a comparative study of urban ecosystems across the Himalayas, Hills, and Terai.
His research will focus on:
• Assessing the composition of native, non-native, and invasive species
• Exploring patterns of species diversity in urban areas
• Understanding implications for landscape management and planning
Dr. Gao will be in Nepal for three weeks, supported by Dr. Sanu Raja Maharjan and Mr. Buddhi, both plant scientists. This collaboration marks an exciting opportunity to strengthen ecological research and knowledge exchange between Nepal and China.
