Celebrating Global Tiger Day 2022

Resources Himalaya Foundation and Environmental Graduates in Himalaya celebrated the Global Tiger Day on July 29, 2022 by organizing a talk program. Dr. Rabin Kadariya, Senior Conservation Officer of Bardia Conservation Program, National Trust for Nature Conservation presented a talk on topic “Creating Co-existence for the Welfare of Human and Tiger”. The purpose of celebrating the Global Tiger Day is to create awareness among the people to conserve tigers and save their natural habitat.

Sharing the happiness that Nepal being able to increase tiger number to 355 in its fourth tiger census, 2022, with highest number in Bardia National Park, Dr. Kadariya surfacely talked about the success story behind their achievement and focused on need of creating co-existence for the welfare of human and tiger in coming days. He addressed the issues of human-tiger conflict, its challenges, and measures taken to mitigate them in Bardia National Park. Giving a blink to the conflict scenario, Dr. Kadariya mentioned the highest death record of human by tiger attack from 2019 to till now is major concentrating on Khata corrider and Gerua of Bardia National Park. Timely Deployment of camera after human casualties, continuous monitoring of tiger in the fringe area by radio collaring, and massive behavior change campaign are the major activities done to reduce tiger attacks in Bardia National Park. In the midterm, he suggested to build a long elongated wildlife overpass on the road to stop the problem of road kills. Dr. Kadariya concluded the talk with some strong measures as management of habitat and prey species, grassland management, building of water holes/ponds, predator proof corral house, game proof fencing with electric fence, and by providing alternatives for forest based livelihood, awareness campaign should be specially focused for the management. The program ended with interactive discussion session between the speaker and participants followed by the vote of thanks and closing remarks by Dr. Dinesh Raj Bhuju, General Secretary at Resources Himalaya Foundation.
