Resources Himalaya Foundation and Environmental Graduates in Himalaya successfully organized our monthly talk program, Pralad Yonzan Conservation Forum (PYCF) on August 6, 2021. The speaker for this session was Dr. Binod Baniya, Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of MSc. Environmental Science in Patan Multiple Campus. He gave the talk on the topic “Space Based Ecological Research in Nepal.”
Dr. Baniya explained the ways satellite images can be used to study different aspect of vegetation using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to show the surface greenness changes and carbon stocks in Nepal. He highlighted on the study of droughts, change in vegetation dynamics and ecosystem service value, human footprint pressure, which were demonstrated through maps. He also gave an overview on the wide variety of data that can be retrieved from satellite, and further emphasized on its use to study the ecosystem.
