Resources Himalaya Foundation and Environmental Graduates in Himalaya successfully organized 112th series of PYCF with Assistant Professor Kamal Raj Gosai, an avid birder and faculty at Department of Environmental Science of Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus, Tribhuvan University. EGH Coordinator, Ms. Saraswati Thapa Chhetri started the program with a welcome note and a brief introduction of the speaker. The title of presentation delivered was “Birds of Different Feathers Flock Together”.
Asst. Prof. Gosai started with the question “why do birds of same feather flock together?” and explained, the predatory and foraging benefits as the major benefits of birds being flock together. Elaborating his research at Chitwan National Park, Prof. Gosai mentioned the Mixed Species Flock (MSF) and total species were found higher at Sal forest than riverine forest. Adding on it, larger body sized species, Greater Racket Drongos were to mostly lead the flocks to find food and the alarm call of predator. Thus, Prof. Gosai highlighted Drongos as the most important nuclear species for formation of mixed species flux, to lead the flocks and to protect other birds in Chitwan MSFs due to lack of gregarious nuclear species. He concluded, this type of study is very important in terms of conservative prospective as it could be good initiation to understand MSFs in various physiographic regions of the country and to protect the birds. The program ended with the interactive discussion session followed by the vote of thanks and closing remarks by Dr. Dinesh Neupane, Executive Director of Resources Himalaya Foundation.
