Resources Himalaya Foundation and Environmental Graduates in Himalaya jointly organized 120th series of Pralad Yonzon Conservation Forum (PYCF) with Ms. Sangeeta Swar as a key presenter. Ms. Sangeeta Swar is a spokesperson for Department of Plant Resources in Thapathali, Kathmandu. She has been working as a Scientific Officer with responsibilities as a coordinator and policy formulator since 2011. She completed her Masters in Botany from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. She has organised many trainings, seminars and conferences in Nepal and also abroad related to the research and conservation of plant resources. She had her presentation delivered on “Plant Diversity Status and Conservation Efforts in Nepal “.
Ms. Sangeeta Swar started her presentation by explaining what kind of plant diversity is found in Nepal. Nepal comprises almost 1,950 species of medicinal plants that includes 1,614 native species, of which 143 species are exclusively of trade value. Nearly 600 species of food crops are consumed in Nepal, of which 374 species are wild food crops. Also she talked about the endemic species. Endemic species are those that live in a limited area, such as a mountain range, lake or island, among others. A total of 284 flowering plants and 24 herpetofauna are endemic to Nepal. Additionally, Ms. Sangeeta Swar also informed us about the importance and diversity of medicinal plants and their conservation efforts done so far in Nepal.
A discussion session followed Ms. Swar`s presentation in which some queries put forward by the audience were duly answered by Ms. Swar. She concluded her talk by reiterating the importance of the flora in the local and regional scale. Eventually, the program ended with a brief vote of thanks from Dr Gaurishankar Bhandari, the Research Co-ordinator of Resources Himalaya Foundation.
