Pralad Yonzon Conservation Forum (Series 124) – Environmental Outreach at Xavier Academy, Lazimpat
In the latest installment of the Pralad Yonzon Conservation Forum on November 21, 2023, students of Grade 12 at Xavier Academy participated in an insightful environmental outreach session. Two distinguished guest speakers graced the event:
Mr. Purna Man Shrestha, Program Coordinator at Mountain Spirits, delivered an informative presentation on “Otters in Nepal.” He spoke about the unique characteristics of different species of otters and their crucial role as top predators in the wetland ecosystem. Mr. Shrestha emphasized the otters’ significance as indicator species in wetlands and the need for their conservation. Moreover, he motivated the students to embrace their roles as stewards of nature, encouraging active participation in the ongoing effort to preserve the environment.
For the second session, Dr. Kamal Raj Gosai delivered an inspiring presentation titled “Dare or Dream to become Nature Defenders.” Dr. Gosai spoke about critical environmental ideologies, such as the “Tragedy of the Commons,” and also highlighted impactful stories of environmental advocates like Greta Thunberg and Licypriya Kangujam. Dr. Gosai highlighted the importance of behavioral changes in everyday practices such as turning off lights, adopting biodegradable alternatives, and upcycling as paths to collective environmental protection. He stressed on the compounding effect of small, individual changes, encouraging a sense of responsibility among the students.
Both speakers significantly enriched the students’ understanding of the importance of nature and the environment, providing motivation for the students at Xavier Academy to actively contribute to environmental conservation. In appreciation, tokens of love were graciously presented by the Principal, Ms. Rashmi Sharma Mainali, and the Vice Principal, Mr. Prakash Shrestha, to the guest speakers and the EGH Coordinator.
